MERIT Drug Diversion

MERIT (Magistrates Early Referral into Treatment, programme) is a voluntary diversion programme that aims to break the drug-crime cycle by involving defendants in treatment and rehabilitation programs.

The project focuses on continuing the work of MERIT in reducing the client’s use of drugs and alcohol and offending behaviours, improving the client’s physical and psychological wellbeing, and supporting client participation in treatment options.

The worker provides support for a full range of issues, including outreach, case management, and assisting the client in resolving accommodation and financial issues. The programme is completely voluntary and the support period can range from three to six months.
