Alcohol & Other Drugs
(AOD) Transition Program

(Sydney)

Quick Exit

The Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Transition Program is an outreach based AOD counselling service for anyone with a history of involvement in the criminal legal system. It provides pre-release and post-release outreach AOD support to people exiting NSW Correctional Centres.

We provide regular individual counselling appointments for up to 12 months, focusing on drug and/or alcohol use and related challenges, and removing barriers to access for people who have a history of involvement with the criminal legal system. The This is a voluntary and confidential service.

To be eligible for the project, clients must have:

  • A history of alcohol and/or drug use, and
  • A history of imprisonment that is related to alcohol and/or drug use.

The following groups of people will be given priority of access to the project:

  • People with cognitive impairments — including Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), Intellectual Disability, and Borderline Intellectual Disability
  • People experiencing co-occurring mental health concerns
  • First Nations people
  • Women with dependent children

The AOD Transition Program is funded by Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network (PHN), Western Sydney PHN, South Western Sydney PHN, and NSW Health.

Outreach Work

We recognise that many people with a history of involvement in the criminal legal system find it difficult to access mainstream counselling services, so we work on an outreach basis. We can visit clients in Correctional Centres to help them plan and prepare for release, in their own homes, at another service, or at another community location.

How We Work

We listen to what our clients want to achieve and assist them in reaching those goals. We work with clients at varying stages – some may be abstinent from drugs and/or alcohol, others may be actively using. We are a highly inclusive service. If a client is interested in talking about how their alcohol and/or other drug use has impacted their life, we can usually collaborate with them to help achieve their goals. We are committed to culturally responsive practice, working alongside diverse communities and continually learning to meet the needs of people transitioning from custody.
